Ideal countryside retreat: The Monchique municipality is considered by many to be one of the most unspoilt and stunningly beautiful regions of the Algarve in southern Portugal. Clearly visible from most of the Algarve are the Foia and Picota mountains, who lend the area its name of Serra de Monchique.The village itself nestles between the two peaks, the one of Foia being the highest point in the Algarve, at 902 metres above sea level. It is famous for its many hiking trails and lush woodlands that make it ideal for all sorts of outdoor activities, as well as many fresh mountain springs and varied biodiversity. There are several well known golf courses also on a short driving distance in the area, most well known perhaps the one at Penina near Alvor. A recently opened course at Morgado de Reguengues offers 18 holes on a beautiful location almost in the shadow of the Foia mountains.
