Renovated 2 bedroom cottage with pool near Monchique in the Algarve, Portugal This delightful stone cottage is situated in a lush valley on walking distance of Monchique. The traditional farmhouse has been built with sturdy granite walls which are effective against the heat as well as cold and has been completely renovated just two years ago when it was updated and refurnished to compliment the traditional character. Outside the pool and terrace area is bordered by flowering shrubs and vines. Nestling in a leafy valley of cork woodland and a river running through meadows with grazing sheep this is definitely one of the most romantic spots of the area. The house has a master bedroom below, with the living room with open kitchen and bathroom on the ground floor. The loft sleeps another two. Housekeeping is included. Ideal countryside retreat: The Monchique municipality is considered by many to be one of the most unspoilt and stunningly beautiful regions of the Algarve in southern Portugal. The village of Monchique and surrounding mountainous region offer a peaceful contrast to the coastal areas that form the backbone of the region's tourist industry. Clearly visible from most of the Algarve are the Foia and Picota mountains, who lend the area its name of Serra de Monchique.The village itself nestles between the two peaks, the one of Foia being the highest point in the Algarve, at 902 metres above sea level. It is famous for its many hiking trails and lush woodlands that make it ideal for all sorts of outdoor activities, as well as many fresh mountain springs and varied biodiversity. Monchique is renowned as the 'Garden of the Algarve', and a quick look around it reveals why. It is a lush area, with agriculture taking place mainly on hand built granite terraces. The region is very fertile, with agriculture crops ranging from oranges, lemons,grapes to apples, pears, cherries and chestnut. The belonging town of Caldas de Monchique has been a famous spa since Roman times, with it´s healing hot sulphur springs still being in use. Thelarger towns of Lagos and Portimão with their white sandy beaches of Praia de Rocha and Alvor are only 20 kilometers to the south, equalling to half an hour by car or public transport. The same goes for the unspoilt beaches near Aljezur and Rogil to the west, on more or less the same driving distance. There are several well known golf courses also on a short driving distance in the area, most well known perhaps the one at Penina near Alvor. A recently opened course at Morgado de Reguengues offers 18 holes on a beautiful location almost in the shadow of the Foia mountains.

The 19th century country house, restored to its former manor-like glory, features Moorish style doors and windows, parquet flooring, antique furniture and rugs, stylish bathrooms and a splendid roof terrace with sweeping views of the ocean and the hill country, «a serra» as they call it. Most places can be reached quite quickly due to the motorways although you still have some of the old roads which can be scenic but also bumpy. Near the villa there is a botanic garden which on a nice day is very beautiful to visit.The driver that we have available for pick up and drop off is available for guided tours this will be paid by yourselves direct to the driver. Owners speak English and Portuguese. There is alot of activities to suit all, you can do dolphin watching as well as diving, all information will be given at the tourist office. You will also find leaflets from previous guests to show you what you can do while in Madeira.

The two nearest islands to Olhao are served all year with regular ferry crossings from Olhao's jetty, 10 mins walk from the apartment.The Islas have sandy beaches, restaurants, bars. There are many other sandy beaches along the Algrave coastline. If you enjoy playing Golf the Algarve has many beautifully manicured courses.
