Mt Sinai is also mentioned in the Quran. At the foot of the mountain is the monastery of St Katherine - the world oldest inhabited monastery. Sinai became a retreat for persecuted Christians in the third century, inscriptions in the rocks and remains of old monasteries and chapels have Arabic, Greek and Hebrew writings.The area holds a strong spiritual signature. The pharaohs built a temple at Seradit el Khadim where turquoise was mined. There is now a beach named Turquoise beach which is open for public use..
